Overview of Section 5 Hike

This week of hiking is like eating Neapolitan ice cream. It has everything to offer. Lots of environmental variety. It has above timberline hikes (San Luis Pass), huge meadows and thick Lodge Pole Pine Forests and low elevation hikes through grasslands and Antelope Habitat (Cochetope Hills). It is also a remote section of the trail.

The first night we will camp at Sargents Mesa. This is a beautiful campsite overlooking a huge grassy meadow with a magnificent vista of Mount Ouray. Sometimes, we have seen elk grazing beyond camp!

The most difficult day is DAY TWO from Sargents Mesa to Lujan Creek.
It is 20.4 miles long and the elevation gains are at the very end!

The THIRD and FOURTH DAYS are easy hikes through the low grasslands of Cochetopa Hills (elevation of 9300 ft.)

The FIFTH DAY, from Eddiesville (no town here, just a trailhead name) beginning at an elevation of 10,320, you will hike through the La Garita Wilderness to an elevation of 12,600 up to a pass just south of 14,014 ft. San Luis Peak. At this juncture, the views will be awesome and inspiring. You will continue on your high altitude hike above timberline for another six miles until you reach the final pick-up point 3 miles below San Luis Pass. From here you will be shuttled back to your vehicle in SouthFork by 6:30 pm.

For this week, we will stay at the same campsite on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
